INTRODUCTION
No matter what season you are in, knowing your true north is critical. Discovering what God is up to is the task for those who are pursuing Jesus. John Wesley, the founder and leader of the Methodist movement, identified an approach to discerning truth that was used to systematically lead a spiritual revival across England from 1738-1791.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

- John 8:31-32 -

HOW DO WE DETERMINE THE TRUTH WE ARE TO EMBRACE?

FIRST :: SCRIPTURE - the living core of the Christian faith

  • Ask, “What does the Bible say about this?”

  • We rely on the way of salvation given in the Bible.

  • We take it as our authority in matters of faith and practice.

  • We use the Bible as a touchstone to examine real or supposed revelation.

SECOND :: TRADITION - the historic teachings of the church

  • Ask, “Is this consistent with church history and teaching?”

  • We inherit the ancient church traditions as well as create new traditions

  • We use the writings of Christians throughout the centuries

  • Traditions must be critiqued in light of the Gospel’s mandate for justice.

  • Historic doctrinal standards provide a springboard for our faith today.

THIRD :: REASON - rational thought, based on logic or evidence

  • Ask, “Can this be held up to critical thought and sound judgment?”

  • Reason is the means for giving structure to our beliefs

  • Reason helps us order the evidence of our revelations and help guard against poor interpretation of Scripture.

  • Reason alone cannot prove or disprove God. Our belief comes through faith and faith alone.

FOURTH :: EXPERIENCES - the sense of what is right within your conscience or evaluating your external experiences

  • Ask, “Does this encourage a growing passion and love for the Lord?”

  • By God’s grace, personal, episodic experiences of faith can fuel our convictions

  • There are variations of Christian experience; none should be considered normative but can be formational

  • Christian experiences are relevant to our times without compromising Scripture.
