IDENTIFY THE QUALITIES you are looking for in a healthy community. Below are some examples to consider when determining the qualities of a healthy community.
Christ Centered (Galatians 2:20)
The one thing every Christian has in common is the deep effectual work of Christ in their life. Our backgrounds, economy, skin color, skills, language, etc. may all be different, but a life that is being formed by Jesus is what we have in common. A healthy community highlights that and keeps Christ at the center. We have affinity because of the work He has done in us, not because of the things we have done.Abundant Grace (Romans 5:20)
Regardless of what we have done or how bad our sin is, we are confident that God’s grace is bigger and more potent. A healthy community reminds one another of that central truth. We are invited to the table of fellowship, not because of our own merits, but because Christ has invited each of us to sit at His banquet table.Biblically Candid (Ephesians 4:15)
The Scriptures paint a picture of what God’s best is for our lives. Healthy communities put a fine point on that and recognize that the best thing for each of us is to candidly embrace and encourage each other with those truths.Practicing Charity (John 15:13)
Jesus said that the greatest sign of love is when we lay down our lives for one another. A healthy community wants to see God’s best take place in one another. In response to that, we leverage what we have for their benefit of one another.Intellectually Curious (Proverbs 25:2)
Life should be an adventure of ongoing discovery. Surrounding yourself with people who are intellectually curious can go a long way to fueling that adventure. And the opposite is true, people who aren’t curious about what God is up to can frustrate the heart. Surround yourself with people who are willing to press into the mystery of God and the uncertainty of what He has next for us.Vibrant Celebration (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Of all people, we should know how to party. Every time someone takes a step closer to Christ and trusts hHim with deepening confidence, we have reason to celebrate. A healthy community calls out those moments, gives room for testimony to God’s faithfulness and, in response, takes the time to celebrate.Hospitable Character (1 Peter 4:9)
When we choose to help others find belonging, we experience the heart of heaven. A healthy community guards against indifference (the enemy to hospitality) and seeks to ensure everyone has a seat at the table of belonging.
